The European Union protects the Tacna Olive

Our original product, together with ten new food products from Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, will be protected against imitations in the European Union under the trade agreement between the Community bloc and these three countries, which will add new geographical indications to the 16 already protected.

In a statement, the European Commission hoped that the recognition of these products “will be valuable for their reputation,” increase the income of their producers and revitalize the rural areas where they are originally manufactured.

From Peru, its Tacna Olive, Amazonas Peru Cacao, Machu Picchu-Huadquiña Coffee, Villa Rica Coffee, Loche de Lambayeque fruit and Junín Pasco Maca will be protected in the European Union.

The multiparty agreement between the EU and Colombia and Peru has been provisionally applied since 2013, while Ecuador joined it in 2017; the pact already protected 16 geographical indications from these three countries in Europe and 116 European ones in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador and has allowed, the commission assures, agricultural trade between the two to grow steadily since its entry into force.

The EU is the third largest trading partner of Colombia, Peru and Ecuador, which mainly export agricultural products to the European continent.

Tacna is a region with regionally positioned products such as olives, olive oil and oregano, as well as others already known worldwide such as pisco. Tacna olives are the ninth Peruvian Denomination of Origin.

Tacna olives have their own characteristics, as they are grown at an altitude of between 25 and 800 meters above sea level, in a production area influenced by the Humboldt Current, according to data from the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi).
